Sooooo many choices

The phrase ‘freedom to choose’ is heard frequently in motorcycle/biker circles and typically refers to the rider’s freedom to choose whether or not to wear a helmet (rather than the wearing of a helmet being a legal requirement).

In this article, I will apply the phrase ‘freedom to choose’ to a variety of other choices that riders are free to make. Scientists suggest that the majority of actions that people take in a given day are not so much out of a conscious choice, but more out of habit. In these cases, the choice comes into play in two ways:

1. When first forming the habit, it WAS a conscious choice.
2. Once the habit is formed, we choose to either let the habit ‘run the show’ or we choose to override our habit with a different conscious choice or we can even choose to replace the old habit with a new habit (not easy, but do-able).

Funny thing about the freedom to choose – we ARE free to choose our actions (and even to choose which habits we want to establish), but we are NOT free to choose the consequences of those actions.
