Rain, Leaves, and Crap on the Road

Fall is here and winter is not far off. Having said that, there are still some good days for riding, but fall and winter do bring their challenges. One of those challenges is the condition of the road surface.

Most riders I have talked with over the years get concerned about riding in the rain due to reduced traction.  And make no mistake – you DO have reduced traction in the wet.  However, there is more traction on ‘clean’ wet pavement than many riders think.  One motorcycle safety ‘guru’ (David Hough) estimates that it could be as high as 80% of the traction that would be available if it were dry (good information to know, but don’t get cocky…).  Where that available traction really starts to drop is when there are other factors (pooled water, leaves, mud, moss, ice, etc.)
